In October 2019, we’re replacing the underlying fund NEI International Equity Fund (AllianceBernstein) with the NEI International Equity RS Fund (Addenda). The new fund qualifies for NEI’s full Responsible Investing program.

• As a result, we’ll be selling the units of the current underlying fund and buying units of the new underlying fund.
• The new fund name will be the Manulife NEI International Equity RS Fund.
• There will be no impact for you or your plan members. For anyone invested in these funds, there will be no change to the number of units or money they have invested.

In May, we told you that Manulife Asset Management (MAM) is now Manulife Investment Management (MIM).

You’ll see fund and firm names updated to “MIM” in our fund pages and other materials by the end of the month.

For example, Manulife Asset Management Canadian Equity Index Fund becomes Manulife MIM Canadian Equity Index Fund. Manulife Canadian Bond Fund (MAM) becomes Manulife Canadian Bond Fund (MIM), and so on.

We’re removing the Manulife CI Harbour Growth & Income Fund (fund code 5232/HICII) from our investment platforms. This follows a review by our Investment Management Services team that showed significant changes in the fund’s management, mandate and processes.

On November 15, we will direct any money – and future contributions–to the Manulife MMF Monthly High Income Fund (Fund Code: 5132/MMFMH).

Manulife Investments has notified us that in May 2018, they’re making several changes to its mutual fund platform to streamline and improve the experience for investors.

Due to these changes, we’ll need to make changes to several funds on our Group Retirement Solutions (GRS) investment platform.

What’s changing

On April 25, 2018 we’ll be changing the underlying fund for the Manulife MMF Corporate Bond Fund. On May 25, 2018 we’ll be changing the underlying fund for the Manulife MMF Money fund.

To remain consistent in our naming of funds, the GRS Segregated Fund name will change too.

Manulife will be changing the process used to charge the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) on Investment Management Fees (IMFs) when it comes to segregated funds. This is to align with other Manulife HST methods and industry practices. The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) will now be based on the average tax rate of the members’ province of residence for each fund. We are changing our system to apply this process directly to the IMFs for each fund.

What does this mean exactly?

In 2010, the HST was implemented to replace the provincial sales taxes and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in some provinces, and new rules were added. The HST applied on IMFs on our system was then determined by the province where the plan sponsor is based.

It will now be applied according to the average tax rate of your members’ province of residence for each fund instead of yours. The rate will be calculated based on the member’s residential address on September 30th and will only be applicable the following year (from January 1st to December 31st). If your members reside in different provinces, Manulife will then apply a blended tax rate called Weighted Average Tax (WAT) to the IMFs.

This new HST process will have no impact if you and your members are all in the same province.

What will happen?

We will make the necessary modifications to our system on June 1, 2018.

There is no action required on your end. We will take care of all the changes in our system and apply them automatically to the IMFs charged to your members.
